ETUDE DE TÊTE D'ENFANT by CHARLES-ANTOINE COYPEL (1694–1752)
THE SUN
What is he looking at?
At whom is he looking?
What do you see when you don't know
the meaning of his smile?
What does he almost touch with his cheek?
What do you almost touch with your thought?
Does your heart hover above him, almost
but not quite landing on him?
If he raised his eyes and looked at you,
would his tenderness, so sure of itself,
warm you?
As if he were the sun and you, his moon?
What does it say about you, about us,
that we look for a light elsewhere, always
outside ourselves?
Don't you see his forehead shining of you?
